There is a band called The Mars Volta that I am madly in love with. A lot of you know that. Today I am especially in love with them. I figure anything that can make me jump around my room and air guitar like a shameless fool is probably worth blogging about. So here it is.
My favorite album in the whole world is called “De-Loused in the Comatorium“. Best intro to any CD, best ending to any CD, best everything else about the CD. Best CD! I said it. I have never heard an album that is more technical, more creative, or more thought provoking. I’ve listened through it countless times, and it NEVER grows old. Every time Omar Rodríguez-López plays that stupid left-handed Ibanez guitar, it freaks me out in a good way. He is a genius. The album is based around a creepy story written by the band’s lead singer, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, and takes the listener to all kinds of places throughout his or her listen-through. The music is out of control, with multiple time signatures per song, multiple keys, and multiple unheard of guitar scales. I love every bit of it.
The Mars Volta has many other albums, but this is the only one that trips my trigger, the only one whose songs never leave my Top 40 in iTunes. De-Loused in the Comatorium is such a complete work that it features a complete storybook to accompany it! What other bands do you know of who are THAT into their music? I love it. Anyone who reads this and says to themselves, “I really need to listen to that record. My life is incomplete until I do.” should talk to me. I will make sure you get a hold of the album. I will also gladly sit down with you and listen through the whole thing, start to finish. I’m probably doing that anyway when you call me.
I believe some music is so good that, even if not recorded by a “Christian” band, it can glorify God by just being so sensational and unique. That’s just a JD theory, though. What do you think?
